Water management for mist systems: zoning, operation and maintenance records

Water management for a mist system depends on its intended use, operating areas and maintenance conditions. Clear operating requirements and useful records provide a better basis for planning than pump flow alone.

Background

An expert commentary published by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on 3 August 2026 discusses digitalisation and water management across the full process. A related policy explanation published on 3 November 2025 also highlights suitability for application scenarios.

These are background documents, not policies newly issued today. The practical suggestions below do not imply new mandatory requirements for mist systems or verified water savings from any particular configuration.

Define the application before planning zones

Cooling, humidification, dust suppression and landscape fog have different requirements. Before selecting equipment, identify the areas that need mist, operating periods, nearby activity and process restrictions. Then discuss whether the installation needs separate zones, scheduled operation or coordination with site activities.

Different areas may not need to operate simultaneously. Explain each area's requirements so that equipment and layout can be assessed together. A model name or product photograph cannot establish whether an entire installation will use water appropriately.

Include water and maintenance conditions

For a quotation, provide available water supply information, existing filtration, drainage conditions and water quality information. Treatment requirements depend on the application and equipment requirements; another project's arrangement should not simply be copied.

Plan access for checking pumps, filters, nozzles and pipework. Staff need to be able to identify unusual spraying and leaks. Inspection intervals and procedures should follow equipment documentation and the site's maintenance arrangements, rather than a general promise of maintenance-free operation.

Use records to support improvements

Record operating periods, zone usage, maintenance work and available water consumption data. When comparing an installation before and after an upgrade, define the measurement period, operating conditions and method. Differences in workload, weather or operating hours should not automatically be attributed to equipment improvements.

A clear requirements sheet helps with equipment selection, commissioning and maintenance responsibilities. Configuration and actual performance should be assessed against site conditions and records, without unsupported percentage-saving claims.
